Pizza Party (and Drake Neighborhood History Training) Tuesday - Nov. 9, 2010

Join the Drake Neighborhood Historical Survey team for a pizza party and historical research training session

When: Tuesday, November 9, 2010, from 6-7 pm
Where: First Christian Church, 2500 University Ave.

History buffs, genealogists, and neighborhood residents past and present are invited to attend this free event.

During this training, participants will learn how to add and edit information in the online historical database (http://historicdrakeneighborhood.org). Hundreds of photos and historic residents have already been added to the database – volunteers are needed to help link them together.

No prior database or historical research experience is required. Volunteers who attend this event will even be able to help out from the comfort of home as the project continues. And add their own research to the database.

If you have a laptop with wireless capability, please bring it to event. After training, participants are invited to stay for a group work session from 7-8 pm.

Pizza will be provided! Reserve your slices with an RSVP to swiilkeshapiro@gmail.com; please include your name, phone number, and email address.

Free parking is available in the lot next to the church, accessible via 25th Street.

The Drake Neighborhood Historical Survey seeks to explore why and how the neighborhood developed, uncover historic patterns of development, and document the various building styles. All findings about people, buildings, and photographs associated with the Drake Neighborhood will be input into the online database, which is searchable by address, name, and architectural style. For homeowners and genealogists, the database can help locate key information about when a house was built, who lived in the house early on, and photographs of buildings and people.

The survey is a joint project of the Drake Neighborhood Association, City of Des Moines, and State Historic Preservation Office, with funding in part from the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The project goal is to understand the past so the Drake Neighborhood can best plan for its future and ongoing revitalization.
